Honor Flight is a movie that follows four brave WWII veterans during their trip to Washington D.C. for the flight of their lives. This program allows veterans from across the United States to fly to D.C to be honored by the memorial that was built in their honor. The organization predicts that 800 WWII Veterans die each day, so their mission is to take as many Veterans as possible to the memorial. Joe, Harvey, Orville and Julian are all Veterans who fought during WWII. Some of them fought in the Pacific and some of them were in the East fighting in Europe. As the movie develops, it is clear that these men made distinct contributions to the War and it becomes more apparent that they need to be honored. This movie is touching, funny, but more than anything else, you walk away knowing that these men not only survived to see US soil again, but they saved the world.

Defiance (2008)

Genre: War/Historical Event/Biography/Action/Drama

Starring: Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, George MacKay, Alexa Davalos, Allan Corduner, Mark Feuerstein, Mia Wasikowska, Iben Hjejle, Ravil Isyanov

Based on the true-life story of 4 Jewish brothers who escaped from the Nazi genocide and went on to create a Jewish resistance movement. Tuvia Bielski (Craig) along with his younger brother Zus Bielski (Schreiber), Asael Bielski (Bell) and Aron Bielski (MacKay) escape from their Polish village and attempt at hiding out in the forest. Slowly and steadily, more Jewish survivors find their way to the Bielski brothers and very soon a small community of Jewish survivors come under the leadership of the Bielski partisans. Zus and Tuvia have a difference of opinion where Zus wants to join hands with the Soviets and fight the Germans and not care about the community. Tuvia, on the other hand, wants to help those who cannot fight for themselves and offer them a chance to live. The movie uniquely showcases the brutality of war without focusing too much on violence and blood. Daniel Craig and Schreiber do complete justice to the role, with talking in Polish, having an accent et al. A good war entertainer which does not offer anything exceptional but is still watchable and enjoyable.

Thumbs up: Great acting, good story
Thumbs down: Everything is above average and not exceptional

The Last Legion (2007)

Genre: Action/Adventure/Fantasy/Historical Event/War

Starring: Collin Firth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ben Kingsley, Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Movies on famous historical heroes and kings is no new concept. But doing the bold move of mixing various stories with a splash of fiction to create something entirely new is certainly unique. Romulus Agustulus (Brodie-Sangster) is one of the few princes of Rome through which the blood of Julius Caesar still runs. The sword of Julius Caesar is a closely guarded secret whose knowledge very few people are aware of. Ambrosinus (Kingsley) is one such person who guards this secret and whose true identity is unknown to people. Soon after Romulus' coronation as the Prince of Rome, the Goths attack his palace and kill Romulus' father and mother and kidnap the Prince. Aurelius (Firth) is the commander who is designated to protect Romulus at any cost. Upon the kidnapping of Romulus, Aurelius assembles a force of soldiers that survived the attack to hunt down the Goths and rescue Romulus. Mira (Rai Bachchan) a stealth attacker from the East, is sent by one of Rome's allies to assist in this mission. Like I mentioned earlier, one who is vaguely familiar with Roman history would immediately recognize the mixture of various legendary stories that are rolled into one. A very average movie who although has a very strong cast, fails to impress.

Thumbs up: Decent entertaining action
Thumbs down: Not exceptional in any area

Lincoln (2012)

Genre: Drama/Historical Event/Biography

Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Tommy Lee Jones, Hal Holbrook, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Abraham Lincoln (Day-Lewis) is one of the most respected President's in the history of United States politics. This respect is not futile, but something that he has earned due to the work that he did. During his second term as President, the American Civil War between the southern states and the northern states was raging and there was mounting political pressure to end the war and bring peace. Lincoln, on the other hand, was strongly of the favour to bring about the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution which would prohibit slavery of any kind. This amendment would not only boost public sentiment for the Republican Party but also ensure that the war ends. However, in order to pass the bill, a 2/3 majority is needed in the house and currently Lincoln is falling short of 20 votes. He must procure these votes from the opposition and at the same time battle with his fellow party-men who are against the bill and eventually create history. The sole reason why the movie succeeded was due to the efforts of and only one person, Daniel Day-Lewis. His phenomenal performance of Lincoln is by far one of the best one might have ever seen and he might even be able to put the real Lincoln to shame. The movie wonderfully shows Lincoln to be not only concerned and thoughtful but also shrewd and cunning, the makings of a true politician. The biggest let down of the movie is the first half, which is slow and very dragged. A load of political jargon and verbose dialogues plague the first one hour which makes the movie a difficult and boring watch. Since the first impression is weak, the better next hour can get easily discarded by the audience as being the same, but it thankfully isn't. The movie picks up smoothly and delivers a composed climax which isn't very over-the-top and isn't too blunt either. A great movie to watch about a great man, but just keep some patience.

Thumbs up: Daniel Day-Lewis
Thumbs down: Unsimplified and verbose dialogues, a bit dragged first half
